Ponmaalai Pozhudhu

You are travelling on ECR by bus in the evening. Forget the East Coast and the beach! Look towards the west. You see the blue sky turned pinkish adorned beautifully by the orangish sun. You turn on the radio and guess what song plays! ‘Idhu oru ponmaalai pozhudhu’ from ‘Nizhalgal’!

Idhu oru pon maalai pozhudhu
vaana magaL naaNugiRaaL
vaeRu udai pooNugiRaaL

You can witness this right in front of your eyes! πŸ™‚ Wow!
P.S.: I didn’t have my camera with me. So, couldn’t take snaps πŸ™

Nice imagery.Would love watching such sights more often, but don’t have the time for it.As Davies puts it in his ‘Leisure’, No time to stand and stare.

    Sathej,
Well, isn’t it said a busy man has time for everything or something like that. πŸ™‚

    Adiya,
I too like IR’s songs. But, Rahman’s music means a lot more to me than anything else. That’s why there is very little mention about others in my blog.
& yeah, I like Poonkathave too!

    Prabhu,
    Is it so?

    Hell’s Angel,
Well, I too know that. But, never have I enjoyed the lyrics of this song as much as I did yesterday!

    Yuva,
    Thanks πŸ™‚

    Ranjhith,
Nope it wasn’t Suriyan FM. πŸ˜› It was Big or Hello FM. I don’t remember which one.

    Sathej,
First of all, thanks a lot for the info. I too wanted to attend that Lec-Dem but I was busy on that day πŸ™ (Now, don’t say a busy person would have time for everything to me :P) Anyway, I was about to mail you and ask if you had gone since it was in your college.

Btw, TMK conducted a Lec-Dem along with a few others during Bharat Sangeet Utsav conducted in November 2006 at Narada gana Sabha. I didn’t attend that but some 15 minutes of it was telecast in SS Music. In that lec-dem too, TMK sang Kamalambike in Todi as sung today and then as per the Pradarshini.

As and when you remember more about the lec-dem, please do let me know.

One of the facts he mentioned was that the Pradarshini lists only 229(if my memory is correct) of the 440 odd Dikshithar songs. For instance,Akhilandeshwari is missing, while Chetashri finds mention. And Todi has only 2 songs while Sankharabharanam has around 7 songs. These are debatable issues,he said.
Another fact is that Shri Subburama Dikshithar himself said things(even at the time of writng the book-1904)were changing as regards the way songs and Ragas were being altered a bit. But,he presents them as he has learnt and would not be ‘influenced’ by modern Sampradaya.
I’ll try to recollect more points. It would be nice if Bharathwaj puts up a more detailed review.
