Deshil yaavum marandhene :-)

dEsh is always synonymous happiness. 🙂 Thanks to TMK & Sangeetha’s concert, I discovered the very beautiful song, prEmaiyil yAvum marandEnE, in dESh. I didn’t know it was from the old movie, Shakuntala starring M.S. till somebody sitting next to me in the concert told me.

The first thing I did yesterday was to search for ‘Sakuntala’ cassette at home & since then, I have been listening to this song on a loop! Till I found that I had an mp3 version of it too with me, I was rewinding the cassette again and again and listening to it. It brought back memories of the days when I had more cassettes than CDs/mp3s and I used to untiringly rewind and listen to many songs again and again from a whole lot of cassettes. Cassettes have almost become a thing of the past now!

Coming back to prEmaiyil yAvum marandEnE, in addition to the inherent beauty of dEsh, the typical old-song feel that this soft, romantic song sung by M.S. & GNB has and the simple lyrics got me hooked to it. Somehow the word prEmaiyil sounded so refreshing compared to the clichéd kAdal! This song is just 2 minutes long. How I wish it had been longer than that!

Lyrics:
prEmaiyil yAvum marandEnE
jIvanam unadanbE
en anbE vAnamudum virumbEnE
prEmaiyil yAvum marandOmE

prEmai veNNilA jOti vIsa
en uLLam paravasamA
ennai marandEn madanamOhanA
nAn unnai maravEN
ummai nAn maravEn
prEmaiyil yAvum marandOmE

Along with prEmaiyil, I have also been listening to tunbam nErgaiyil and Lalgudi’s dEsh tillAnA too. 🙂

P.S.: Listening to this song has made me want to watch some good old Tamil movie like Sri vaLLi, which has a song every other minute. I like movies like those and there was a time when I used to watch movies like those regularly on TV.

Even now, I listen more to cassettes than MP3 🙂 Its cassettes at breakfast/lunch/dinner. The issue with cassettes is after repeated listening, they get worn out. The problem is there aren’t MP3 versions available for the kind of cassette recordings that I have and converting it is not something am too good at.

Desh is one of the best ragas in Carnatic Music that allows room for a lot of bhava…and about the cassettes: Is there any place/shop of some kind that you can convert them in? Because it’s a bit of a pain going through with all the converting at home, especially when you don’t have the right equipment and end up with below-average versions of what used to be an amazing song! 🙂

    Aparna,
Welcome to my blog! 🙂 I know that there are many shops which do the conversion, but I am not aware of any.

    Blogeswari,
I have mailed you. I am not sure if it got attached properly. Let me know if it’s not there. I’ll mail it again

Several shops in Chennai do the conversion. Infact there are atleast a couple I know of, near my place at Alwarpet. Shouldnt be a problem getting the conversion done. Almost every shop dealing with some audio facet or the other has this facility. Have done it a few times for friends, the only issue is most shops require 2-3 days for even 2 or 3 cassettes. There’s also a cassette player from Sony that has a USB port fitted, so one could just play the song and record it in a pen drive. Just got it recently, quality is quite good. Seldom use it though – don’t have that much patience to sit and do conversions. Occasionally do it for friends 🙂

i moved most of my songs from cassettes to itunes using

    audacity.

    http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

play your songs in a cassette player, hook it up to your computer (audio out/speaker out from the player to line-in in computer) installed with audacity and record in audacity as the songs are playing.

stop the recording when the cassette player stops, repeat the process for the other side.
if you wanted to store as albums this would do.

i went a step further to chop them up into individual songs (using audacity) and catalog-ed them based on ragams, composers, etc.

    Blogeswari,
You are welcome 🙂 Yes it’s easy to sing and that’s why I have been humming it often for the last one week 🙂

    Sathej,
I have been thinking of buying that Sony music system for quite a few months now. The only reason why I am hesitating is that the cassette head of the Sony music system that I have right now stopped working properly within 3 years or so! And, now, the CD player in it too isn’t working! But Sony’s sound is just awesome and that’s why I guess I’ll soon buy Sony itself again..

    Aparna,

I have been following your blog for more than a year now. Its such a pleasure to read about music, maniratnam movies and nature. I sometimes envy you for all the concerts you get to attend in Chennai. Lucky you! Desh is one of my favorite raaga. I tried searching for the song, but no luck.
Could you send it to me?

    Thanks!

It was a little muted Aparna, not as brisk as last fall season, *nevertheless very enjoyable*. The RTP was awesome. Kedaragowlai was very good (but I think Gayathri Venkataraghavan’s Parakelanannu is still the best out there). I dont know enough to review but this is the list.

I could not identify some ragams.

    Varnam – Neelambari
    Purvikalyani – Satru Vilagi
    Huseni – Eppadi Manam
    Kalyani – Ambaravamma
    Kedaragowlai – Saraguna Palimpa
    Thani
    Sahana – Innienna Pechurukuthu
Subhapantuvarali – Vadivela en mel – RTP (Behag ,Bhagyashree ,Durga ,Darbari Kaanada)
    Thillana – Darbari Kaanada
    ??? – Dasane Vindisa
    Khamas – Karpuram Narumo
Viruttam – Maanadamazhuvada (?? Hamsanandhi Nattakurinji, Sindhu Bhairavi)
    ???? – Engum Niraindiru
    Mangallam

    Neelesh,
Thanks for the list 🙂 I saw the post in rasikas.

I loved Sanjay’s Kedaragowlai when he sang it in Bharat Sangeet Utsav in 2006. It’s been 3 yrs since I last listened to an elaborate Kedaragowlai by Sanjay! 🙁
