The past two weeks have been so hectic with me going to concerts almost everyday. Till now, after each concert of Sanjay’s, I had been awed by the concert so much that I wanted to write a post on it right away but I never found the time. But today’s concert was such an excellent one that there was no way I was going to sleep without writing about it here! It’s made me forget my tiredness/laziness. Mind blowing is the only one word that comes to my mind when I think about the concert!
I reached the concert venue just as Sanjay was finishing the Madhyamavati varnam. From the moment I entered till the mangaLam, it was absolute bliss what with Sanjay rendering highest quality music! π
After the awesome fast-paced swarams in Vagadheeswari, followed an elaborate Vasanta alapana. By the time the Purvi Kalyani alapana ended, I am sure there would have been no one out there who wasn’t satisfied after getting to listen to such detailed, beautiful Purvi Kalyani, Bhairavi and Vasanta alapanas. π The fact that the Bhairavi and Vasanta songs were in Tamil made me enjoy the neraval at anjael anjael enRu acchatthai poakkidum and utthama piravi aLitthaai eL atthanaiyum naNRi illaiye all the more. Like in many concerts of Sanjay’s, in this one too, no neraval was done for the main piece of the concert (if you could call it that since the preceding two songs too lasted as much duration as EkamranAtam Bhajeham). The Tani Avartanam that followed was great.
After Oho Kaalame that needless to say was so beautifully rendered by Sanjay, followed what’s the best ever Bhageshri I have heard till now! Every moment of the 40-minute RTP made me go wow! Bhageshri has never sounded so beautiful! From the pallavi started what I would call Arudra Darshanam/Tiruvadirai special with the pallavi being taaNDavam aadum tillai Natarajan tajum takajum takiTajum endru. π I am at a loss of words for describing the RTP. The claps from the audience didn’t seem to stop at all for the RTP! Nagai Muralidharan’s playing was as great as Sanjay’s singing. And so was the percussion by Tanjavur Ramdoss and T V Vasan.
I don’t think I need to say how Sanjay’s Aadum Chidambaramo was. π If it was Oho Kaalame last year, this Season, the song that Sanjay is singing often is Engum Niraindhirukkum – a beautiful song with great lyrics. Sanjay sings it so well with all the feel needed for it.
After every tukkada, I thought that would turn out to be the best tukkada of the concert. But, it wasn’t to be. π The last song before mangaLam, kaaNa vaenDaamo was so moving with Sanjay adding words like inRu kaaNa vaeNDaamo and angu kaaNa vaenDaamo aptly signifying today’s Aarudra Darshanam. The claps from the audience didn’t seem to stop after every tukkada too.
At the end of the concert, as expected, Sanjay received a standing ovation! A great concert where not only the audience but also the musicians on the stage seemed to be enjoying it as much. This will always remain a concert to remember and I just can’t stop raving about it. π On days like this when I get to listen to such excellent concerts, I feel so happy that I am able to enjoy the divine and beautiful Carnatic music and when the concert in question is Sanjay’s, I can’t help but feel proud to call myself a fan of Sanjay’s. π
Aparna…. Indeed was one of the concerts which had a lot of those “goosebumps” moments. His consistency levels have been unmatchable! The whole Bageshri stuff was like out of the world!! Couldn’t sleep that night! : )
Sriram,
Yes! Well that Bhageshri didn’t seem to leave me the next day also and that too when he ended the concert at Krishna Gana Sabha with a song in Bhageshri, I forgot the awesome Mayamalavagowlai, Gowrimanohari and Nattakurunji that he sang and it was only Bhageshri again that continued to haunt me! π
Badbad miss – not this one but the one where he sang Meru Samana as main. One of my favourties, and Mayamalava Gowlai as main would have been a treat:)
Sathej
Seriously…! Luckily I happened to record the Kalarasana concert and hav heard the bhagyashri RTP almost like 10 times… Loved the Manirangu piece “Jaya Jaya Padmanabha” at KGS. Seems like I just can’t live without his music these days!
Not to forget his brilliant rendition of Nasikabhushani RTP at PSBB!
Sathej,
Yes you missed it!
Sriram,
I missed that Nasikabhushani concert π
Hope you got my mail…
Hi Aparna, Could not agree with you more! I spent 2 weeks in Chennai for the season and did not miss a SINGLE Sanjay except the one at Tamil Isai Sangam – back in Banglore now, I can still hear the Bhageshri and the Abheri @ Academy ringing in my ears – He is unmatched and astounding every time!
Keep up the blog reviews! π
Priya,
Welcome to my blog!
That’s great! I didn’t go to the Tamil Isai Sangam one too. True. Wasn’t Sanjay at his best this Season? π
Thanks π

1. Who is the composer of Ellaam Sivan Seyal – Vasanta ?
2. Petra thaai thanai – Senchurutti
Engum Niraindhirukkum – Senchurutti (or is this in KURINJI ?)
Raghu,
Welcome to my blog! I remember seeing in rasikas.org that ellaam sivan seyal is Suddhananda Bharati’s composition. I don’t know who the composers of the other two songs are
