Vaaranam Aayiram Songs
The songs of Vaaranam Aayiram are what I have been listening to since morning today. As is the case with most of Harris Jeyaraj’s songs, all the songs have an already-heard-before feel to it. No song is bad though. Here’s my ranking of the songs:
7. Anul Maele by Sudha Raghunathan – The most boring song
6. Ava Enna by Karthik and Prasanna – Another boring song with classic dappankutthu beats. I liked the humming interlude at 3:05 till 3:33.
5. Yethi Yethi by Benny Dayal, Naresh Iyer and Solar Sai – An OK song when compared to the previous two songs. The first part of humming at 0.20 is very similar to the tune of the line un vizhiyil vizhundhaen of suttum vizhi sudare. How many more times is the same tune going to be used?
4. Adiye Kolluthey by Benny Dayal, Krish and Shruti Haasan – Didn’t find anything extraordinary about this song too. Since this song and Yethi Yethi have fast beats, these will anyway be liked by anybody.
3. Oh Shanthi Shanthi by Clinton and S.P.B.Charan – This song that has been sung quite well by Clinton and Charan is the first song that I kind of liked. I felt that this song has a feel of the song mudhal naaL (from Unnale Unnale) to it.
2. Nenjukkul Peindhidum by Hariharan, Devan and Prasanna – I was looking forward to listening to this song since this has been sung by Hariharan. This is a very soft and melodious song. I like it for the guitar and Hariharan’s voice.
1. Mundhinam by Suriya, Naresh Iyer and Prashanthini - This is the song that I liked instantly. I am listening to it on repeat mode now.
This song starts with dialogues by Suriya. There are only a few heroes whose voices I like. Suriya is one of them. There is no sound other than Suriya’s voice initially and just as he says ‘nee avLo azhagu’ (I wish he could pronounce zha properly though), guitar starts. Nice.
After the perfect dialogue delivery by Suriya, there couldn’t have been a better voice than Naresh’s to start the song.
Naresh Iyer is the perfect choice for this song! My friend and I just couldn’t stop raving about Suriya and Naresh Iyer’s voices throughout our lunch break.
Though Prashanthini has sung well, she fades in comparison to Naresh. ![]()

True.. Naresh Iyer’s voice aptly suits to this song specially after the dialogue delivered by Surya.. Even I like Surya’s voice… There is something good about his voice.. Am eagerly waiting to see the visuals of this song..

Maybe I am wrong. But I do not know why the starting of ‘Nenjukkul’ reminds me a lot of ‘Meherbaan-Instrumental’ from Ada!

Nice to see Harris here. Your portfolio is increasing. How abt some of Yuvan?
> 6. Ava Enna
At 0:31, seems to be a direct rip-off something frm Taal.
> 4. Adiye Kolluthey
At 2:04, a beautiful voice emerges & you never spoke abt it!!
Overall, HJ reminds a lot of Leysa Leysa & Kaaka Kaaka. Ouch! How is that they are coincidentally repeating?

surya is not ??? (tho different in acting ) since he cant say ???? correctly ..
“fast beats, these will anyway be liked by anybody.” fast music is equally great as melodies..
I love the ????????? ???????? song but its highly inspired (sema dippi )from George Michael’s Faith-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viPWb3ieH6o

liked 3 of the songs.. Mundhinam, Nenjukul and Om shanthi… The songs have this ‘I have heard this somewhere before feel’ and coming from HJ, its no surprise. Not bad anyway. Looking fwd to Gajini, Yuvraj, Dilli 6, Blue, Connections…. err.. Boss is prolific this year..ain’t he?

Almost similar to my ratings….but I still feel Nenjukkul is much better than Mundhinam..well probably because of Hariharan..:)
But anywas better album from HJ after a long time…

There is nothing unique about the soundtrack of Varanam Aayiram. All of HJ songs are starting to sound the same. He should really start innovating. And plus Shruti Hassan’s vocals are very ordinary. Had it not been for the surname, I doubt if she’d have gotten this far.

Venkat,
Me too. I hope the picturization is good
F e r r a r i,
Oh.
Ranjhith,
Yuvan will find a place here only when he gives some phenominal music.
I didn’t notice that Taal rip-off.
The voice which you find beautiful doesn’t sound beautiful to me.
Every other HJ’s album reminds me of his earlier works.
Aravind,
Yes my blog doesn’t understand unicode. You could have typed those words in English at least in your second comment.
Agreed but fast beats are great only when the music accompaniying the beats is nice. These days, many don’t care about how good the music is and like a song just because they can dance to the beats.

SK,
Benly,
Yes HJ’s songs are always like that.
>Boss is prolific this year..ain’t he?
Yes he is
Girish,
I have myself now started feeling that nenjukkul is better than mundhinam!
Teal,
Agree with all that you have said. I didn’t like Shruthi’s singing at all.

Yethi Yethi and Adiye Kolluthey have the potential to be chart toppers as they are peppy numbers. HJ is usually known making a success out of his peppy numbers. Echo your thoughts on #6 & #7
