Anna University Counselling
Last week, my cousin had her engineering admission counselling and I went with her. Though I don’t remember much about my counselling (Thinking about the fact that it happened six long years back makes me feel old.
), all I can tell you is it was well-organized. This year too, it was very well-organized. In fact, I would say that in the recent times, I don’t remember seeing anything that was as well-organized as this.
Clear instructions were given to the candidates at each point of time and any questions that the candidates/those accompanying the candidates had, were answered patiently. And surprises of surprises, the counselling started before time! They had given clear instructions in the counselling call letter that the candidates have to be there at the venue (Anna University) an hour before the scheduled time. The candidates were asked to enter the counselling hall some 45 minutes before the scheduled time and after giving all the necessary instructions, the counselling started 20 minutes before the scheduled time! Being someone who always ends up waiting everywhere, I felt so happy that for once, something started before time!
While all the candidates and those accompanying them listened to all the instructions with full attention, yet nobody seemed to care about one particular instruction - switch off your mobile phones. These days, irrespective of the place where this instruction is given or who says it, this has to be the one instruction that not many follow. Despite the announcement, a lot of them were busy talking on their mobiles or letting their mobiles ring loudly, while waiting for their turn for counselling to arrive. I wish they had at least put their mobiles on silent mode.
The only thing that I wish had been there was air-conditioned rooms for the candidates to wait (only the final counselling hall had a/c). It was too hot and sultry! Besides, two years of working in a fully air-conditioned place has got me spoilt. ![]()

I think they have a reason for making only the final counselling hall air conditioned. As always, that’s the little reward for waiting in the other halls, going through the whole rigmarole. You know, just like the engineering seat itself is that small reward for all the hard work put in over the years, and nights[yes, i consider days and nights separate entities altogether].
Of course, probably the final counselling hall had higher up officers sitting there managing stuff. And as we all know, only the higher ups have such problems.

Planning to write a post on these admissions - infact have been planning for quite some time - no time nowadays
I would think most have already ‘booked’ their seats even before writing exams. The whole procedure of these engineering admissions somehow doesn’t appeal to me and sometimes gets me irritated - the attitude of the parents adding to it all the more. People take up a course because the ranker infront does it.

Hey! I was there last week for recruiting and saw that counselling activity going on at a feverish pace [:)]

Arvind,
All you need to do to go for Anna Univ counselling is to score good marks.
Puranjoy,
Yeah but if the final hall too was not air-conditioned, I wouldn’t even have wished the other rooms had a/c too
>And as we all know, only the higher ups have such problems.
That’s true
Sathej,
Hmm
Divya,
Hope you recruited lots of candidates
Oh

was that a taunt
??? i wont mind that all ..
..

Well , i know i am better off most of the 97 percentiles the state board generates
by the way i did get a call from them so no need of good marks
every year 30000 thousand seats remain vacant whihc suggests that a guy with just 60 percent marks can go there ..atleast he would be away from a bunch of nerds..

Arvind,
I knew you won’t mind
>>every year 30000 thousand seats remain vacant whihc suggests that a guy with just 60 percent marks can go there
Of course, he can always buy the seat in some good college & join
Yeah he can but it will be to some college whose name nobody would have heard
>>atleast he would be away from a bunch of nerds..

You think all those engg students are nerds?

i consider teh counselling is all about the parents .. they take it more seriously than the kids .. i really feel for them since they worry about their kids future crunching numbers while checking out the display boards .. whiles the kids hardly realize almost most of them.. the parents rope in all the people who know about the process and gather every single info about the college while the kids dont even pay a heed of importance to it ..
the very thought of anna counselling and the fact that its purely based on the board exam marks these days really annoys me , moreover you see a lot of colleges brainwashing the parents just at the time of counselling ..

Vishnu,
What you say is true to some extent. During the admission time, there have been many times when I have been asked a lot of question about how my college is, from many parents. Many of them worry a bit too much.
>>the fact that its purely based on the board exam marks these days really annoys me
It annoyes me too!
